Our card for today, Wednesday, April 18th, is taken from the Sacred Traveler Oracle Cards by Denise Linn – Traveling Lightly – “Simplify your life; otherwise it’s difficult to hear the voice of the Creator.”
We are pretty much raised to be consumers from the moment we are born on this earth. We need to work to make money so we can buy “stuff”. So by saying that, let’s put aside the fact that most of us need to make money just to survive in today’s world. It takes money to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table, and the many other necessities that we require to live. Okay now we have done that, let’s look at all the other stuff we tend to acquire that is not a necessity. I’m as guilty of it as anyone else, believe me.
Part of the reason we do this is because we believe that if we buy this or that thing it will make us happy. That’s what they show us in advertising isn’t it? If we just have that thing we will be happy, but it’s a lie. We might be happy for a short time, but then the novelty wears off and we are looking for the next thing that might make us happy. And so we keep accumulating more and more stuff. Then there is the need to replace our gadgets with the newest and best we can afford. Basically whenever we buy a piece of technology nowadays, whether that is a cell phone, a tablet, a computer, a TV, or a car, it’s already being replaced in the market by something newer and better, or faster, or sleeker, or has a better camera, or whatever. The list goes on. And so now we have to have that newer thing because now that will make us happy.
So where does it all end? It ends with us. For those of us who are older and have been at this for a while, we know that the claims of most advertising is false. We have spent a lot of money acquiring our “stuff” and we are not any happier than we were before we got it. This is telling us that we don’t even need most of this stuff we have. Lately I have been trying to follow this rule, if I buy something like a new shirt, then I have to give to charity one I already have. Same goes for most things I buy that are not necessities. I am also keeping track of things I already have in a similar way so that if I have not used or worn it in a year, then I give it away. This way I get rid of all the stuff that I don’t really need. Nice to have, yes, need it, no. With less stuff there is also less maintenance involved, less to clean, less to deal with. More time for doing what makes me truly happy.
This not only goes for acquiring things we don’t really need, but also includes things we do that are not really necessary either. So many people like to be busy busy busy, running here and there, involved in this activity or another, and that’s fine if it makes you happy. But, with all this busy-ness, where is the time to relax, or to spend in prayer or meditation? It all comes down to what is truly important to us, things like spending time with our loved ones, spending our money on things that truly will make us happy or are necessary, instead of just buying more “stuff”, spending time in nature, and spending time with God. It’s time to think about what is truly important to us and then simplify our lives accordingly.
Have a great day everyone! ~Namaste~
