Our card for the weekend, June 23rd and 24th, is taken from the Magical Mermaids and Dolphins Oracle Cards – Simplify Your Life – “Eliminate clutter from your home and work life to balance the flow of activities.”
This card is asking us to get rid of all the things we have in our homes or in our work spaces that are not essential, things we don’t use or need. Speaking for myself, I tend to be a “pack-rat”, I hate letting things go, and I keep adding to them. This leads to needing more space for the things I have and more time to clean it all. I have begun to slowly get rid of the things I don’t use or need anymore. It’s a painstaking process because I look at the things I’m going to get rid of and think “what if someday I need that??” However, if I am honest with myself, I purchased it months ago, or even years ago in some cases, and have never taken it out of the cupboard, or worn it, or needed it in any way. It’s just taking up space.
I have been seeing a lot of posts on Facebook and articles elsewhere that talk about becoming minimalist, meaning we only keep those things that we use or wear regularly. For example one of the things we should do when cleaning out our closets is to turn all the hangers the opposite way and then when we wear something we put that hanger back the right way. At the end of a year, if we have clothes on hangers that are still turned the opposite way, meaning we haven’t worn that piece of clothing in a year, it’s time to let it go. The same goes for cleaning out our cupboards, if there are dishes or pots or pans that we have not used in a very long time, then chances are it’s not necessary to keep them and we can let them go. We can give all of our unnecessary items to a Thrift Store or to someone we know who could use them.
We don’t need as much as we think we do. We live in a consumer driven world. Every advertisement we see promises we will be happy if we just buy this product, and yet many of us do that and are no closer to the happiness we wanted when we purchased that item. So we just keep buying more and more stuff. Just think how much simpler our lives would be if we had less stuff to find space for and less stuff to clean. Just think how much money we could save if we stopped buying the things we don’t really need but just want. It really is about simplifying our lives so that we spend less time cleaning and organizing our stuff and more time doing the things that bring us joy.
Have a great weekend everyone! ~Namaste~
